Anxiety

Anxiety is a natural emotional response that our brains use to react to stress and warn us of potential danger. We all feel anxious at times, like before a test, when facing a problem at work, or when making an important decision. It's normal to have occasional anxiety.

However, anxiety disorders are a distinct group of mental illnesses that cause constant and intense fear and anxiety. These conditions can lead to avoidance of social situations, work, school, and family gatherings that can trigger or exacerbate symptoms.

Treatment for Anxiety

While anxiety and it's related disorders are able to be treated, research suggests that less than 40% of people with anxiety actually seek treatment. Those that chose to improve the symptoms of anxiety experience a significant reduction in their symptoms.

Common Symptoms include:

  • Feeling restless, wound-up, or on-edge.

  • Being easily fatigued.

  • Having difficulty concentrating.

  • Being irritable.

  • Having headaches, muscle aches, stomachaches, or unexplained pains.

  • Difficulty controlling feelings of worry.

  • Having sleep problems, such as difficulty falling or staying asleep.

We can help

Magnolia Professional Counseling provides psychotherapy that involves working with a therapist to reduce your anxiety symptoms. It can be an effective treatment for anxiety.

Cognitive behavioral therapy is the most effective form of psychotherapy for anxiety disorders. Generally a short-term treatment, it focuses on teaching specific skills to improve symptoms and gradually return to the activities you've avoided because of anxiety.

This treatment includes exposure therapy, in which you gradually encounter the object or situation that triggers your anxiety so you build confidence that you can manage the situation and anxiety symptoms.
